Recently Kansas IPL has begun hosting Energy Stewardship Days, with priests from the Salina Archdiocese and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia gathering to learn about IPL and energy efficiency, and then finishing with a tour of a wind project. These events have took place in April and May, with more to come. more »

Religious Leaders Testify at Second EPA Hearing in Seattle
A report from Washington IPL on the second of two EPA hearings. The first hearing was last week in the DC area. This article is crossposted from EarthMinistry.org:
On May 21, 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) came to Seattle to receive public comment on their findings that greenhouses gases pose a threat to human health.
Three religious leaders testified at the EPA hearing in the morning — Lutheran Bishop Wm. Chris Boerger (ELCA), Rabbi Zari Weiss (Jewish Climate Challenge), and LeeAnne Beres (Executive Director of Earth Ministry/WAIPL). Climate Solutions Policy Director KC Golden also joined their panel. The testimony was well received by the EPA and they received a long round of applause from the audience. more »

Faith Leaders at Monday’s EPA Hearing on Global Warming
About 100 speakers attended the EPA’s public hearing on global warming Monday. These speakers included clergy members representing Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, UU, and Muslim traditions. Allison Fisher, from GWIPL, tells us that the EPA really appreciated receiving input from the faith community – since they spend so much of their time on the science. Sierra Club’s Heather Moyer, reflecting on the hearing, was particularly impressed by the words of Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center’s Imam Johari Abdul-Malik. more »

After listening to Lisa Jackson, the new head of the EPA, Senator John McCain, Carol Browner (Climate Advisor to the President), and numerous introductions to celebrities in the audience, the moment arrived. House Representative from California, Henry Waxman walked into the room, which was full and buzzing with excitement. Waxman and Ed Markey from MA have proposed regulating greenhouse gases in the US for the first time in US history.

A Vote in Congress or a Test of Faith?

On Sunday, newspapers in key areas across the country printed full-page ads addressing congressional representatives. The message in the ads, sponsored by Interfaith Power & Light, was from religious leaders about the importance of protecting Creation.
The ads ran in The Desert Sun (CA), Rocky Mount Telegram (NC), The Daily Reflector (NC), The Marquette Mining Journal (MI), The Augusta Chronicle (GA), and Savannah Morning News (GA).
On Wednesday, similar ads will run in San Antonio Express-News (TX) and Traverse City Record-Eagle (MI).
